Jatamansi

Himalayan Nard (Sanskrit name - Jatamansi) is harvested in the valleys of the Himalayas at altitudes of 3000 metres(about 10,ooo ft.) It has been used for centuries in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. It is known for its uplifting effects, harmonising emotions, favouring inner peace, and aids in balancing the body of all three Ayurvedic doshas.
Jatamansi has been used as a perfume and medicine. Indian physicians have long prescribed it as a nervine tonic, carminative, and an aromatic addition to medicinal oils and ghees. In Ayurvedic medicine this herb is sometimes called, “divine plant” and is used to counteract the effects of day-to-day stress. Traditionally, it has been used as an air purifier as well. The active constituent in Jatamansi is jatamansone. This herb has analgesic and stimulant properties. The oil has anti-arrhythmic and hypotensive qualities. This herb's sedative properties increase awareness, as opposed to valerian that dulls the mind.

Vetiver

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a perennial grass of the Poaceae native to India. The name vetiver is native to the Tamil language. Old Tamil literature mentions the usage of vetiver for medical purposes. In western and Northern India , it is popularly known as Khus.

Vetiver is mainly cultivated for the fragrant essential oil distilled from its roots. Worldwide production is estimated at about 250 tons per annum (Lavania). Due to its excellent fixative properties, vetiver is used widely in high end perfumes. It is contained in 90% of all western perfumes. Haiti is one of the leading producers of vetiver in the world, along with Java, China, India, Brazil and Japan. The United States, Europe, India (also a producer) and Japan (also a producer) are the main consumers.

Vetiver oil is described as deep, sweet, woody, smoky, earthy, amber, balsam. The best quality oil is obtained from roots that are 18 to 24 months old. The roots are dug up and cleaned then dried. Before the distillation, the roots are chopped and soaked in water. The distillation process can take up to 18 to 24 hours....more

Camphor

When the root or bark is steamed, it produces a volatile, white, crystalline compound with a characteristic pungent odor, usually referred to as camphor. (The aromatic oils in such plants as tansy and feverfew may also be referred to as camphor). Trees that produce the real camphor are slow-growing. In fact, the Chinese believe that it cannot be extracted from trees under fifty years old. In the US, camphor is extracted from leaves and twigs of the oldest trees, which does less damage than the more invasive Chinese method. Despite this, most of the camphor now used in the US is produced synthetically.

I listened as Radiyyah went through the different grades of frankincense in her stock. "Those big yellow lumps aren't so good," she said. "These are better. Look, they're like pearls. But," she opened a small box, "these are the real fusus" Her word "gems" was well chosen: Teardrops the size of fat ring-stones, some were silvery, others had opalescent hints of rose, green or topaz. "This is najdi," she explained, "from the najd [plateau], the high land behind Jabal Qara." She pointed to the range of mountains across the plain from Salalah.
